Residence Camp Counselor - Land Activities
**Position Summary:**

Provides direct supervision of a group of Campers in a seasonal resident camp. Maintains safe and clean activity area and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive and atmosphere that promotes camper safety and engagement.Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on youth development including the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith.

**Essential Functions:**

+ Supervises a group of children in cabins and at activities.
+ Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA core values.
+ Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
+ Attends staff meetings and trainings.
+ Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
+ Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff.
+ Maintains activity area cleanliness and standards of operation.
+ Knows and puts into practice the safety standards pertaining to each activity.
+ Maintains constant vigilance of the activity area.
+ Maintains current knowledge of all emergency procedures within activity areas.
+ Responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; provides timely and accurate reports and follow-ups.
+ Conveys information on programs and schedules to campers.
+ Maintains accurate records required by YMCA and state agencies.

**Minimum Requirements**


+ High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
+ Previous experience working with children preferably in a camp setting
+ Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: Target sports, Performing arts, arts and crafts, general athletics, pottery, etc.
+ At least 18 years of age.
+ Relevant activity certifications:CPRPro, First Aid, AED, Emergency Oxygen, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
+ Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

**Time Commitment**

We ask that applicants be available for roughly 10 weeks of the summer starting on 5.27.17 and running through 8.10.17. Training for the summer takes up the first 2 weeks before the summer which is 4, 2 week long, sessions. Staff members live on site in the cabins with the campers for that entire time period.

**Language Skills**

Ability to read, interpret, retain, and teach documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure/educational manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, staff, members of the YMCA, and/or others, as well as in one-on-one situations.

**Mathematical Skills**

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

**Reasoning Ability**

Ability to apply common sense, understanding, and sound mature judgment to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, including assisting with curriculum learning. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to be sensitive and alert to the needs, feelings, and safety of others. Ability to ensure children's safety and maintain YMCA, ACA and state standards and guidelines at all times.

The employee must possess the ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights. Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, or walking for various lengths of time.

Current record of tuberculosis examination and/or current local health department regulations, examinations, and/or immunization as required by the local or State Department of Health.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. Nonsmoking and drug and alcohol free work environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles, toxic, or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and/or blood.Employees are regularly exposed to bodily excretions from children, depending on developmental level of children in the employee's care. The job is located on Lake Livingston at YMCA Camp Cullen in Trinity, TX for a YMCA Resident Camp Program.
